The tidal station built into an existing seawall on Lake Sihwa in Gyeonggi Province, South Korea, operating since August 2011 with 254 megawatts from ten submerged bulb turbines, the biggest tidal power plant in the world. The runner-up and former record holder is the 240 megawatt La Rance station in Brittany, operational since 1966 and still the oldest. Sihwa generates only on tidal inflows into its basin, so annual output is modest against the nameplate figure; it is run by the state water company K-water.
