Guri Dam

Hydroelectric Facility

Guri Dam, formally the Central Hidroeléctrica Simón Bolívar, is a hydroelectric dam on the Caroni River in Bolívar State, Venezuela. Its initial phase was completed in 1978 and the full plant was inaugurated in 1986, giving it an installed capacity of about 10,235 megawatts. It was for a time the largest hydroelectric power station in the world by installed capacity, a rank it took from the Grand Coulee Dam in the United States before Brazil and Paraguay's Itaipu Dam surpassed it. As of the mid 2000s Guri supplied more than a third of Venezuela's electricity in a country that draws roughly three quarters of its power from hydroelectric sources.
