On 26 April 1986 reactor 4 of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Soviet Ukraine exploded during a botched safety test, the worst nuclear accident in history. The release contaminated large areas of Ukraine, Belarus and beyond, forced the permanent evacuation of the surrounding zone, and reshaped nuclear safety practice and public opinion on nuclear power worldwide.
