Godfrey Lowell Cabot

Godfrey Lowell Cabot was an American industrialist who built one of the major American natural gas and carbon black enterprises of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Starting a carbon black company in 1882, he grew it into what became the Cabot Corporation, an operation that came to include carbon black plants, tens of thousands of acres of gas and oil bearing land, roughly a thousand miles of pipeline, several corporations with worldwide operations, plants converting natural gas into gasoline and a number of research laboratories. By 1890 his company ranked as the fourth largest carbon black producer in the United States, and demand for the material grew sharply with the rise of the automobile, since a single tire required about six pounds of carbon black to manufacture.
