The British-American engineer who in 1849 invented the first modern hydropower turbine, the reaction turbine that still bears his name. Working in the mill town of Lowell, Massachusetts, he refined earlier inward-flow designs into a machine so effective that Francis turbines remain the workhorse of hydroelectric stations worldwide.
