The first modern hydropower turbine and still the most widely used, a reaction turbine invented by James Francis in 1849. Water under pressure flows inward through guide vanes onto curved runner blades, suiting the medium and high heads of most large dams, while Pelton wheels take the very high heads and adjustable Kaplan turbines the low ones.
