Nuclear Pioneers

Moses Blackman was a South African-born British crystallographer, born on 6 December 1908 and died on 3 June 1983. He studied at Rhodes University and then at the University of Göttingen under Max Born, and in 1933 moved to England with a fellowship to Imperial College, later joining its Physics Department as an assistant lecturer in 1937. In the late 1930s he made theoretical calculations on neutron diffusion for the effort to achieve a sustained chain reaction of uranium fission, and he served on the British Committee on Atomic Energy during 1940 and 1941. With George Paget Thomson he designed the 1946 toroidal solenoid fusion device.
