William Hart is remembered as the father of the natural gas industry in the United States. In 1821 he drilled the first natural gas well in America, a shallow shaft roughly twenty seven feet deep dug along Canadaway Creek in Fredonia, New York, at a time when modern wells reach thousands of feet underground. Gas from Hart's well was carried to nearby buildings through a pipeline made of hollowed out logs sealed with tar and rags, an early and improvised form of gas distribution. His well led a group of entrepreneurs to found the Fredonia Gas Light Company in 1858, the first natural gas company in the United States.
