A power plant design that pairs a gas turbine with a steam turbine, using the hot exhaust of the first to raise steam for the second. Combined cycle plants convert more than sixty percent of the energy in natural gas into electricity in the best modern units, the highest efficiency of any widely deployed thermal generation, and they start and ramp quickly enough to balance variable wind and solar output.
