Storing electricity as motion: a heavy rotor is spun up by a motor when power is cheap and surrendered back through a generator seconds or minutes later, a technology suited to smoothing brief fluctuations rather than shifting whole evenings of demand. The United States had four operational flywheel storage systems in 2022, with a combined 47 megawatts of power capacity but only 17 megawatthours of energy behind it, the signature of a fast, shallow store.

ESSs are not primary electricity generation sources. They must use electricity supplied by separate electricity generators or from an electric power grid to charge the storage system, which makes ESSs secondary generation sources.
