Natural Gas

Also Known As Fossil Gas
Fossil Fuel
Flame

A fossil fuel consisting mostly of methane, burned for electricity, heating and industry, and moved worldwide by pipeline and as liquefied natural gas. Gas-fired combined cycle plants are among the most efficient thermal generators, and gas emits roughly half the carbon dioxide of coal per unit of electricity, which placed it at the center of debates over its role in the energy transition.

Facts
Source Class
Fossil Fuel 1
First Commercial Year
1821 1
The well at Fredonia, New York, drilled in 1821, supplied gas for local lighting and is the conventional first commercial natural gas well in the United States; Chinese salt drillers piped gas through bamboo far earlier.
